Description
Where Music Is Born takes place at the origin of something. The setting is a collection of historic laboratory equipment — the kind of machines that once conjured electronic sound out of silence, wire, and voltage. Van den Heuvel photographs these spaces with a single recurring figure: a pilot, visor down, face concealed. The covered face is a deliberate signature in Van den Heuvel’s work — seen before in the astronaut of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and the animal masks of Crazy Houses. Here it serves the same purpose: to remove the individual and reveal the whole. Without a face to read, the viewer is left alone with the atmosphere — the hum of the machines, the weight of history, the strange poetry of a pilot standing where music was invented. Works from Where Music Is Born have been acquired by an art association in Sweden.
