The Story
Alienation is the debut photographic series by Mark van den Heuvel, created in 2016. The work explores the distance between the self and the world around it — a tension rendered in stark black and white that strips each image down to its psychological core. The standout piece, The Ego Has Landed, sold out rapidly and is now held in private collections across Europe, a testament to the series' immediate resonance with collectors and institutions alike. Alongside the monochrome works, a single colour photograph — Colormadness — breaks the silence of the series. Rooted in the visual language of Japanese art, it introduces an eruption of colour that reframes everything around it: disorienting, vivid, and deliberately out of place. That contrast is the point. Alienation asks what it means to feel foreign in a familiar world.
