The Story
Crazy Houses I is one of Mark van den Heuvel's most exhibited and collected photographic series. The work takes place inside abandoned buildings — but this is not urban exploration as you know it. Van den Heuvel transforms these forgotten spaces into something altogether stranger and more deliberate. His subjects wear animal masks. Not as a provocation, but as a tool. The masks remove identity from the equation, freeing the viewer from the distraction of a human face and pulling their attention toward the full weight of the image — the decay, the light, the atmosphere, the story the room itself is telling. The result is a tension between the absurd and the deeply unsettling, between theatre and truth. Some images make you laugh. Most make you look twice. All of them stay with you.
