The Story
's-Hertogenbosch is a photographic series by Mark van den Heuvel, made between 2017 and 2018. It began with a simple impulse: to rediscover the city he calls home. Armed with a camera and dressed as an astronaut — his alter ego — Van den Heuvel set out to visit the hotspots of his hometown as though arriving there for the very first time. The astronaut is not a costume. He is Mark. A figure at once familiar and out of place, moving through recognisable streets with the wide-eyed curiosity of someone who has just landed on an unknown planet. Through this lens, the ordinary becomes strange and the strange becomes extraordinary. Unexpected encounters reveal themselves around every corner — moments that had always been there, waiting to be seen. 's-Hertogenbosch is a love letter to a city, written by someone willing to feel like a stranger in it.
