Biography
"Between Reality and Reflection"
Born in 1982 in the Netherlands and raised in the charming city of ’s-Hertogenbosch, Mark van den Heuvel has followed a creative path full of unexpected turns. His early school years were not always easy, but his curiosity and imagination set the stage for an adventurous career. He began working in sound engineering and event management, where he contributed to major national and international productions. After a decade in that fast-paced industry, Mark shifted gears and entered the telecom world, quickly rising to the role of regional manager at an international company.
In 2016, however, Mark decided it was time to return to what truly inspired him — photography. What had started as a passionate hobby became his full-time pursuit. His first fine art series, Alienation, released later that year, caught the attention of a local art
gallery and marked the beginning of his new chapter as a visual artist. His debut series, The Ego Has Landed, and his unique Polaroid works sold out soon after their release, affirming his growing reputation in the art world.
Mark’s work is known for its emotional depth, surreal undertones, and reflections on contemporary life. His photographs invite viewers to pause, smile, and think — exploring the tension between beauty, chaos, and identity in modern society. In 2017, two of his pieces from the Hieronymus Garden series were acquired by the Hieronymus Bosch
House in the Netherlands, becoming part of its private collection — a meaningful connection to his hometown’s artistic heritage.
Since then, Mark’s photography has been welcomed into several public collections across Sweden, with notable acquisitions by Regional Värmland’s Art & Culture Unit, one of his major collector accounts. His works such as Moerputten, Color Madness, School of Wonders I, and The Cave have all been added to municipal and regional art collections,
showcasing his consistent creative evolution.
Together with his wife, Mark founded Studio Mark & Jimena in Sweden — a warm and creative space that serves as a photo gallery, summer shop, and marketing studio. After taking a brief pause in his artistic career, Mark is now returning to his home country, the Netherlands, to continue his journey in fine art photography with renewed energy and
inspiration.
Entirely self-taught, Mark describes himself as an observer of the world — fascinated by the contrasts and contradictions of our time. Through his lens, he transforms everyday moments into thought-provoking visual stories that stay with the viewer long after the first glance.
